Editorial Review for Schug Carneros Estate – by Carolyn Dempsey
Overview
As a Carneros District producer, this winery focuses on wines that grow well in foggier coastal climates, with pinot noir being foremost among them. As a wine-maker originally from Germany's Rhine Valley, the owner of this family-run winery has built a reputation on his European-style wines, exhibiting high acidity and little of the pronounced oak that's so predominant in California wines. This character apparently pleases many Europeans, as about a third of Schug's wine is exported to Europe. The rest, however, is available for tasting at the Sonoma headquarters.
Features
The diminutive tasting room in this post-and-beam-style facility provides wine samplings daily, and tours are available daily by request. In addition to the two Carneros and Reserve pinot noir bottlings, Schug also offers a sparkling pinot noir that'll add a little fizzy zip to your glass.

This is a great spot. When you turn on Bonneau Rd. keep driving until you go through the gates and up the hill. There you'll find a quaint tasting room without all of the hustle and bustle of other tasting rooms. You're surrounded by rolling hills so the scenery is very picturesque. There are cave tours avaialble but we didn't take one. The wines are Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays the cool climate at Schug is ideal for growning the grapes. They also have a picnic area for eating, drinking and relaxing.
Pros: picnic area, beautiful scenery, great wine
