This cavernous SoMa event space is raw and unpretentious..
The Scene
Studio Z (formerly the Transmission Theater) evokes the olden days of clubbing, before the proliferation of too-cool cocktail lounges and corporate nightclubs. The venue's main room features high-raftered ceilings and unfinished brick walls, which give the impression of partying in a cool, undiscovered loft space. There's also a full bar in the back and an upstairs mezzanine, as well as a side room stocked with art and couches.
The Draw
Not really a nightclub, Studio Z is an event space that welcomes outside promoters from all scenes and genres. It's like a blank canvas for the arts community; a place to host events ranging from photography exhibits to jazz concerts to DJ scratching contests. It's best to go for specific events, rather than just to hang and have a drink.
