Editorial Review for In-N-Out Burger – by Citysearch Staff
In Short
Founded in 1948, In-N-Out locations are known for their eye-catching yellow-arrow logo and spic-and-span red and white interiors. The streamlined menu includes fries, beverages and three types of hamburgers. These all-beef burgers are topped with fresh vegetables and Thousand Island-like dressing on griddled buns with optional American cheese; fries--oversized potatoes with the skins still on--are dunked in cholesterol-free cottonseed oil until just the outsides are done.

Insider Tips
Know Before You GoSecret menu items include burgers protein style (wrapped in lettuce with no bun) and animal style (a patty cooked in mustard and topped with sauteed onions, extra sauce and pickles). Fries can be ordered well-done or animal style.
What to DrinkIf you can't decide between a chocolate, strawberry or vanilla shake, ask for a Neapolitan and they'll mix all three together.

In-and-Out's much-touted "fresh" hamburgers are, more often than not, grisly, overdone little pieces of you-know-what, - just tough, nasty little hockey pucks of a burger. I shall further blaspheme by saying that the Big Mac (actually - and most appropriately - known in the food industry as a "B.M.") is tastier and more satisfying. Yes, I'm aware of all the salt, fat, insect parts and calories in the B.M., but the I&O burger has just the same, Dudes. How I&O got to be Numbero Uno only shows that you can never go broke underestimating the taste of the Amercian Public (maybe they should call I&O an H. L. MenckenBurger). You want taste and quality, go to Zuni or some other good restaurant and spend the extra money. Or did you move out here from Peoria for the I&Os?

Terrible location in the city, but best fast food money can buy. Check out the burgers down on the Peninsula or up in Marin.
