The Scene
Panoramic windows hug white walls, making this a great place to watch the action outside. In the dining room, patrons sit at red padded banquettes, tables or the popular bar. A roofed patio offers another full bar and seating for large groups. The crowd runs the gamut--from birthday parties to first dates, gays to straights.
The Food
A San Francisco slant on home cooking is served at bargain prices. Almost two dozen PEI mussels are presented in a creamy tomato-coconut sauce, while the French onion soup's beef-stock broth is sprinkled with only a hint of Romano cheese. The signature Meyer Ranch pot roast is prepared perfectly medium rare and can be pulled apart with a fork. The slightly seared Hawaiian tuna is a light, satisfying entree. To close, house-made ice cream is paired with an Oreo-like chocolate cake that has a slightly crispy crust and is stuffed with creamy white and dark chocolate.

Had dinner at Home on a weeknight. Super busy totally crowded place. I love the Castro, but it was tough to find parking. The wait was kind of long and man they really pack you in there. A little too tight for my taste. Food was decent though, nothing special but good.

The meals are satisfactory. They are over priced. It is very noisy. The desserts are great. We ofter go out to eat someplace else and have dessert here.

I had heard great reviews about Home in the past so I brought my husband there tonight expecting great food. It was the total opposite. We tried the mini corndogs as our appetizer. It was lukewarm, at best. The hotdog itself was tasty but the cornmeal wasn't crispy at all. We also ordered some cornbread. It came out piping hot and yummy. I ordered the Seafood Cioppino minus the mussels. It was brought to me as if someone had already eaten most of the food offered on the plate. I had two mediocre pieces of baguette to soak up the stock. The dish consisted of TINY pieces of bay scallops, shrimp and 3 pieces of tuna. Where was the crab??? Our waiter agreed with me that the plate looked bare, so he brought it back to the kitchen to add the crab. I believe the manager came back with my new dish, but the kitchen only added a tablespoon of crabmeat under the baguette slices. My husband asked if I had ordered a sampler dish - where was the food I was going to pay almost $20 for??? Even the diner sitting at the table next to us asked why my dish looked the way it did! I didn't want to complain again, so I dug into the cioppino only to be disappointed even more - it was less than lukewarm. My husband ordered more cornbread to curb my hunger. I also downed an entire bottle of Pellegrino to feel full. My poor husband ordered the Niman Ranch flatiron steak - medium. It came out medium-well and tasted as if the meat had been frozen for days. Bad bad food. I didn't even want to bother with the dessert menu. Service was fine but I won't be going back to Home.
