Great Service, Bad Food. I had Dinner once again at Home as I do on a weekly basis if not more. As usuall the staff, from the host to the manager, was exceptional. The food on the other hand has gone way down hill. As with everyother restaurant you get your occassional so so meal. My last 3 or 4 dinning experiences have gone from bad to worse. What is going on with the kitchen staff? What once was a neighborhood restaurant were you could always count on home style cooking has truly left its roots. What's up with the warm peach raddicio salad? That has to be one of the worse side dishes I ever had. My last few dishes have been terrible. I think a restaurant named Home should stick with basic home style dishes and sides. If I want fancy I can venture down the block to Mecca or 2223. Stick to Home style menus and sides, like your mac and cheese. Also why are there no Entree size salads on the menu for dinner? Sometimes I'd like to eat something a bit lighter. I hope the kitchen gets it together. I would truly hate to lose such a nice friendly restaruant in my nieghborhood.
Home Rocks. First off, it's probably the best Mac and cheese in SF. Add in the consistently executed comfort food stand bys along with several higher end dishes and you've got a restaurant that scales to most occasions. Bring the kids for an affordable and fast dinner or bring a date and indulge with cocktails, starters, mains and dessert get away for under $100. And a great time to boot! And besides the good looking space, the kicker is that there's an attached (pay) parking lot. Parking in the Castro can be a challenge so you're always covered here if you tire of circling the hood trolling for spots. The down side is that the tables are quite close together and it can get loud. But in all quite worth it! I've dined here 5+ times and have loved it every time...
Cosy brunch spot. I am surprised to read all the awful reviews for this restaurant as it has been a favorite brunch spot for about a year now....of course, I've never had dinner and mainly go for the eggs or french toast and the fireplace. I only enjoy the seating by the f/p and I usually get the same waiter who is very friendly and sweet. Maybe I just know the wayto optomize my experience there.
disappointing Thanksgiving. It was really like a factory. Prix fixe meal. When I asked for a slight variation (dressing on the side) the waitress winced and said she didn't think they would do it. The turkey was like pressed and rolled--it was NOT carved from a real bird! Mashed potatoes were $5 ADDITIONAL, and were served without gravy! They included overly sweet sweet potatoes with the meal. The place was so dark we couldn't see our plates, and so noisy I had to yell to be heard by my two tablemates.
You're better off at your own home.. All this place is missing is fluorescent lighting. Maybe the current lighting is used to cast shadows over its bad service, horrible seating and decor, and mediocre food. The over-exuberant waiter even seemed personally offended when we didn't order his favorite dessert. For a glorified diner, it's funny how people can be so unpleasant and stuck up. You're better off eating meatloaf from Healthy Choice in your own home. Just BAD.
Glorified Diner!.
Glorified diner with horrible service and hospitality! Rude Hostess and a vulgar restaurant manager do not make good business sense! This was my first and last time dining here. Thing to watch out for:
COMMUNAL TABLE this is the long bench like table by the fireplace, they will actually seat multiple groups at that table without telling you, half way through our dinner they brought two random people to sit with us, even though we'd told them we had two additional people joining our party of six.
Why?. Went to Home on a weekday night. The place was mostly empty but yet we were seated between two tables. In case you do not know, the tables at Home are so close it is like eating in a High School cafateria (lame)! We got up and moved to a different table and were told we could not sit there. We stayed at the table, ate, left and never went back.
Comfort cuisine in a Castro restaurant that offers prime people-watching and a fireplace patio..
The Scene
Panoramic windows hug white walls, making this a great place to watch the action outside. In the dining room, patrons sit at red padded banquettes, tables or the popular bar. A roofed patio offers another full bar and seating for large groups. The crowd runs the gamut--from birthday parties to first dates, gays to straights.
The Food
A San Francisco slant on home cooking is served at bargain prices. Almost two dozen PEI mussels are presented in a creamy tomato-coconut sauce, while the French onion soup's beef-stock broth is sprinkled with only a hint of Romano cheese. The signature Meyer Ranch pot roast is prepared perfectly medium rare and can be pulled apart with a fork. The slightly seared Hawaiian tuna is a light, satisfying entree. To close, house-made ice cream is paired with an Oreo-like chocolate cake that has a slightly crispy crust and is stuffed with creamy white and dark chocolate.
Reservations don't work - unfriendly service. Please take into account that reservations do not work here, even if they pretend they do. We waited patiently for 60 minutes, after making specific reservations 2 days in advance !!!!! And there is no client service at all. The best they can tell you is: "I'm doing the best I can". But they don't care because their restaurant is always packed. This is the most unfriendly service I have ever encountered. I would never go there again.
A Restaurant I Can Call Home. I live in the neighborhood and have been here several times. I've had a good experience each time. The place is usually bustling with people, but I still find the atmosphere cozy. This isn't a quiet restaurant, but I'm always able to chat with my dining companions without repeating myself. The prix fixe menu is a great deal and the entrees like the meat loaf and roast chicken are tasty. The service I've experience has ranged from so-so to good. I'll definitely be back to Home.
