Tips for Boulange

October 10, 2008

The Russian Hill outpost of this colorful SF French bakery chain features the requisite decadent pastries and bowls of lattes, plus burgers and heartier entrees.. Snugli-strapped babies and their well-coiffed moms cruise through this French-accented cafe, while pairs of leisure seekers dawdle over bowls of cafe au lait, warm fresh-baked goods like tartes, scones, croissants and macaroons. At lunch or dinner, pick up a baguette sandwich, or spend a bit more for one of the "tartines" on levain, such as a grilled-to-order croque monsieur, or more substantial fare like the flank steak.

French countryside in SF. I love people watching here and it's as close as you'll get to a cafe in the French countryside in SF. Everything I've ever tried, including the financiers, canelles, tarte tatins, macarons, etc., etc., is great. However, I actually think the stuff is fresher at Boulange's sibling, Bay Bread off of Fillmore. And beware...if you go at the end of the day, many of the great selections are sold out.

Fall in LOVE here.... ...with the amazing cafe fare! Consistently the best cafe in San Fran-- too bad it's far for non-Marina dwellers. This is the perfect complement to full-service dining La Folie a couple doors down. Salmon on pain levain was excellent sprinkled with a bit of sea salt and evoo-- even the sprinkling of chives were fresh and crispy! A piping hot latte with the house special canneles de bordeaux with it's beeswax nuance and creamy centers make the trip worth it everytime. Possibly the best and most authentic croissant in the Bay! Love it, love it!

magnifique. not being native to SF, i can't vouch for this being the best bakery in the city, but it's definitely the best i've visited. i'll come from across town any time i can. perfect coffee. beautiful and delicious pastries and galettes. incredible sandwiches. great prices. and a chance to practice french.
