A series of good experiences and then....
I wish I didn't have to write this review, because this has actually been my favorite local restaurant in the two years I've lived in Russian Hill. I've been at least once every 6-7 weeks, usually without reservation and I've been just fine dining at the bar.
Unfortunately, the last time I was there was... well... the last time. Food was good as ever and we had a nice dinner for four. Until we were done with our food and left with just a bit of wine in our glasses. In the 15 minutes from the plates were cleared until we left we were asked three times in rapid succession if "everything was OK?" Yes thanks. Check came and then we were asked to finish our wine at the bar!!!! That is rude and unacceptable service after I've just consumed a $12 appetizer and a $21 entree.
the worst meal of my life. i was with 8 girlsfriends having a birthday dinner, and ordered a risotto. it came sitting in a pool of oil and was totally inedible. we sent it back, not asking to be given anything else or even asking for it to be taken off the bill and the owner came out and SCREAMED at us, telling us we were a group of secretaries from san leandro, when in fact we were all professionals, from pacific heights. i have NEVER in all my life been treated with more disrespect, and would NEVER step foot in that place again. i recommend you dont either!
A favorite neighborhood rest.. Another of my favorites, Street is fantastic. The comfort food is better than a fireplace and cup of cocoa. The owners are friendly and great at their jobs. It's some of the best food around.
California-French favorites and a dreamy atmosphere draw a stylish crowd to this Russian Hill spot..
In Short
This happening boite offers modern French cuisine in an ethereal atmosphere. The long, narrow room is deep red, with the handsome bar as centerpiece. Both drinkers and diners sit at the bar. The menu is Californian with a French accent. Bar snacks run the international gamut from crispy fried calamari to fat, perfect fries by the bowl. Entrees include steak frites, braised lamb shanks and other bistro fare.
Very enjoyable. The food at Street was great. In fact, I can't stop thinking about a pork verde dish I had with some sort of spicy corn bread thingy. Man that was good. Wine list was very diverse. I don't like places with low or no energy and Street has a lot of energy. Also has a nice local feel.
Want to try more items on the menu.
We were there on a Saturday night by 7pm to avoid the crowd, but it would've been nice to have the option of a reservation. The menu had a variety of americanized international dishes. I had the prawn risotto which was very good albeit a tad salty.
It's a kind of place I would've expected bread but at least you can get fries for $4. The only thing about the service was they would clear our plates before we even had a chance to say we're still working on it. I'll give it another try.
Great Service, Fabulous Food.
Street does not take reservations so the wait is potentially long; however, the staff encourages you to wait in the bar area and is very attentive with drink menus, etc.
Each person in our group ordered a different entree and all were excellent! The crab cakes - good, seared ahi - better, risotto - wonderful and the burger of all things - amazing!
We brought our own wine with a minimal corkage fee and the service was excellent.
Simply Awesome. This is one badass joint. I would wish this dining experience on anyone. From a warm greeting when we entered the restaurant to quick, efficient service on a busy Saturday night, every expectation was met. The food was great and good-sized portions...we had the steak with frites and the risotto, both were excellent. The Street is the total package.
. I've been a patron of Street practically since it opened and have always had nothing but a fantastic experience. The burger is literally the best in town---forget Zuni, Taylor's, or anyone else. The fries will make your thighs swell before you even put one in your mouth, they make some of the best hummus I've ever had and the soups are on par with any five-star restaurant in S.F. The pork chop is total heaven--right up there with Zuni. Unlike some other new establishments on Polk, John and Lynn's Street make you feel at home and they treat you like family. 3 cheers!
Street Rocks!. Every neighborhood should be so lucky. Street is the one place I always go back to. The food is great, the price is right and the people are friendly. IMHO, they have the best steak and fries in the city -- and you don't need to mortgage your house. This place reminds me of a couple of my favorite neighborhood places in New York. Great food without the BS.
