Editorial Review for Union Square – by Amy Thomas

In Short
Appropriately located in the heart of San Francisco, Union Square is the city's shopping mecca. The square, bounded by Stockton, Powell, Post and Geary streets, is dominated by Macy's to the south and Saks and Tiffany's to the north. Many other upscale establishments, including Gucci, Hermes, Neiman Marcus and Cole Haan, line the perimeter.

Insider Tips

Parking

Metered street parking is available once in a blue moon, but the Union Square Garage below the park is the most convenient long-term option.

Know Before You Go

The neighborhood doubles as San Francisco's theater district and has some great hotel bars. Grab a drink at the Redwood Room in the Clift Hotel, then catch a show.

Look Good

Ride the glass elevator at the St. Francis to the top of the building for a panoramic view.

The Extras

Here are some more stores to visit: Betsey Johnson, Britex Fabric, Nike, Ann Taylor, Eddie Bauer, Coach and other mega-chains.

Union Square has it all. Macy's, Tiffany, Saks, and coming soon- Barney's of NY. Easy walk to everything. No finer shopping experience.

Pros: variety of stores

Cons: parking, crowds

Great upscale stores. Friendly helpful staff at every store we were in (Burberry, Ralph Lauren, Armani, Prada, Frette, Neimans, Coach, Hermes, Ann Taylor, Macys, Nordstrom, Banana Republic, etc, etc, etc)--except for Tiffany & Co but the store was so busy, maybe they were just a little frazzled from the crowd. Nice common area in the middle of the square, clean, good food. It was fun to ride the cable cars from the hotel. The only thing I would suggest is a directory map with the stores and locations on it--it's easy to forget which street a store was on if you want to go back to it. Overall: GREAT!

Pros: Great stores, Great food, Clean for urban area

Cons: No map of stores, Beggars
