Editorial Review for Ferry Building – by Tom Geck
The Background
Located at the foot of Market Street on the Embarcadero, many of the city's parades, political rallies and special events begin here. A busy farmers' market began operating here in April 2003. Built in 1898, the structure was damaged in the 1906 and 1989 earthquakes. Its famous 230-foot-tall clock tower greets all those who enter San Francisco from the east. The facility still serves as a working port for commuters taking the Golden Gate Ferry from other parts of the Bay Area.
Features
The marketplace is housed in the 660-foot-long Grand Nave of the building featuring a variety of specialty food shops such as Hog Island Oyster Company, Peet's Coffee & Tea and MarketBar (a lunch and dinner venue). The brick and terra-cotta features have been painstakingly restored and massive skylights provide an open-air feel.

The farmers market at the Ferry building is the best farmers market I have ever been to...all local organic and sustainable products..great vendors in the ferry building..the Golden Gate Meat Company is the best..they are the distributor to the fine dining restuarants in San Francisco..all thier products are hormone-antibiotic free, local and free range..and the staff at their shop in the ferry building are so helpful with tips that make their product come out perfect!
Pros: Best Farmers Market, restuarants, and views
Cons: Slanted Door is overpriced, for asian food in San Francisco they are abnoxious

Saturday morning farmer's market is my favorite thing to do in the city. Our out-of-town visitors love it and we love lazily strolling around tasting the bounty of our land. (Make sure you try Roli Roti meats!) I also go to the ferry bldg weekdays to have a lovely lunch, that is as slow or fast as I make it. I always cap off the meal with chocolates from Recchiuti.
Pros: Gourmet food, friendly merchants, beautiful view
Cons: Long bathroom lines, more benches are needed
