The 106-year history is interesting, and the setting is beautiful, but the real attraction here is the hot tub.. The Experience
If you've ever waxed romantic about becoming a lighthouse keeper and tending to exotic merchant ships from an isolated perch, this lighthouse will enthrall you. Not only can you visit Point Montara, but you can also live in it. The lighthouse, built in 1900, has been converted into a youth hostel with eight bedrooms, a recreation room, two kitchens and an outdoor hot tub that overlooks the surf.

The Background
The lighthouse continues to function, serving as an active navigation aid for ships approaching the city from the south. The site was chosen for a fog signal in 1872 after a series of shipwrecks occurred on the point, but the lighthouse was not built until 28 years later. The station was automated in 1970 and an off-shore horn buoy has replaced the fog horn.
