Editorial Review for San Francisco City Hall – by Tamar Love
Designed in 1915 by architect Arthur Brown, this French Renaissance-style, Beaux Arts landmark is considered by many to be San Francisco's most beautiful structure. The 24-carat gilded dome soars 306 feet above the newly refurbished building, reopened in January 1999. Internal highlights include birdcage elevators, crystal chandeliers, oak paneling and skylights, all of which have survived three fires and a major earthquake. In addition to housing local government offices, City Hall is a building you can actually use. At the City Payment Center, you can buy transit passes, process your passport, pay your water bill, take care of business and property taxes, get a license and register to vote. You can also rent various rooms for posh events such as weddings, parties and galas.
