Editorial Review for Washington Square Bar and Grill – by Jennifer Joseph
The Scene
A venerable North Beach institution, loved by Herb Caen and other San Francisco icons, this restaurant still draws a crowd with its Italian-accented California cuisine and nightly live jazz. Photos of early 20th-century San Francisco adorn the burgundy and cream walls, and boisterous groups of neighborhood locals and tourists relish the comfortable elegance and professional service.
The Food
The menu features Italian and American classics with a contemporary California touch. Starters include Asian spiced baby back ribs and garlic steamed mussels. Calamari salad with cannelini beans and oranges delightfully combines unexpected flavors, and the classic hearts-of-romaine Caesar salad is well-prepared. Generous portions of comfort food are flawlessly done, including delicious house-made pappardelle with hearty lamb bolognese sauce and tender, grilled double pork chops with garlic mashed potatoes. Save room for a seasonal dessert such as playful pumpkin-cranberry bread pudding with Wild Turkey bourbon sauce or rich mocha pot de creme.

Liam Tiernan of Tiernan's at Fisherman's Wharf will be re-opening the restaurant at the end of the summer. Be on the look-out!

I went by today and this place was closed for business, the landlord was looking in as well. He seemed surprised the place was closed. The delivery of bread was still sitting on the table and not a soul in sight. Pretty odd. Considering they were opened the night before.
Pros: Cheap because its closed
Cons: Closed
