Editorial Review for Chinatown – by Citysearch Staff

In Short
Start at Chinatown Gateway, a dragon-crowned portal located on the corner of Bush and Grant. Originally known as Dupont Street, the road was infamous for opium dens and gambling halls. Today, Grant Avenue is notorious for the number of shops selling jade jewelry, clay Buddha statues, electronics and kites. On Stockton Street, herbalist shops and fish and produce markets recall Shanghai, circa 1930. Dim sum, hot pot and more regional culinary delights are available at every turn.

Insider Tips

Parking

The Portsmouth Square Garage (Kearny and Pine streets) is reliable but pricey. Park at Union Square and catch the cable car (California Line) into the neighborhood.

Know Before You Go

Don't miss the Chinatown Kite Shop (707 Grand); the alleys between Grant Avenue and Stockton Street; the temples and painted balconies on Waverly Place--spend a couple of hours and wander.

ok, i have very mixed feelings about chinatown. i doo all my grocery shopping here, mostly in the stockton markets. fruit and vegtibles are extremely cheap, think 1/4 the price of safeway. they also have live fish, which is coll, and live frogs and turtles which is not so cool. theren are also many cheap wonderful places to eat, as long as you stay from grant (where the tourists are). on the bad side, chinatown is way overcrowded. people push and shove, and bump into you like its nothing. shopowners also often try to overchangre me, because i am obviously not chinese. there is also a lot of yelling which bothers some people. finally, i am sorry but the stores all smell really, really bad. so a great place for fresh cheap produce, but a slightly unpleasent social experience.

A great place to get some very cool things, but check around, the prices vary quite a bit from store to store. Have your camera ready, you never know when a dragon will be walking down the street!

Pros: Cheap Shopping

Cons: Crowded

With its bustling markets, mysterious alleys, hidden temples and busy restaurants, this is one of the city's most colorful neighborhoods.  See the full editorial review.
