The Scene
At the historic Hyde Street Pier, which borders the park to the east, you can visit a worthy assortment of old-time wooden ships. The most impressive is the square-rigged Balclutha, which rounded the Horn many times throughout its illustrious history.
The Experience
Aquatic Park's impromptu--and hopefully rhythmic--drummers welcome you to the beach. You'll find them gathered on the concrete stairs just behind the Maritime Museum, thumping the day away. The more you explore, the more fun you'll find in this bay inlet as you mingle among kayakers, kite fliers, rock sculptors, sand-castle builders and shivering tourists (fog in California?) standing in line for the cable cars.
