Editorial Review for Sunflower – by Patrick Heig
Right in the thick of the grimy bustle of 16th and Valencia, Sunflower isn't pretty, but it's cheap, heaping plates of Vietnamese are a thing of beauty. There are two sides to Sunflower: one, on Valencia, houses a few tables and a hot, greasy stove, and the other, on 16th, is a more spacious dining room connected to the other by a hallway--slightly more elegant, and out of sight of a kitchen that needs no exhibition. Massive portions of specialties like shaken beef, sunflower prawns and hot & sour soup all come in under $15, although it's the lunch specials--$8 for a platter of rice, salad, soup, imperial rolls plus meat, fish or veggies, big enough for two--that make Sunflower one of the best bargains in the city.

This is one of my favorite restaurants! If you wanna take your loved one for a nice, romantic dinner, pick one of the french restaurants instead and expect to pay for it. If you are looking for a local place with great food for reasonable price, you will love Sunflower. I ate there at least 30 times and I am still not sick of the food (surprisingly :) My favorites: Shaken Beef and Vietnamese Crepe (amazing).
Pros: food
Cons: ambiance

I think you'll only like this place if you've never had good Vietnamese food before. Vietnamese food can be great, but this is not the spot. It took me a couple of times to figure out that it was mediocre - I really wanted it to be good! And it certainly looks good - but the taste does not deliver as you would expect. I like the ambience, cheery and laid-back - but the food ... it's just not worth eating out for.
Pros: Vietnamese Food in the Mission
Cons: Just not that good!
