The Scene
Since its Berkeley beginnings in 1966, the chain has swapped its beatnik spirit for corporate glory. Cool flagstone floors and rich mahogany-colored paneling make for a sleek stop, but not a haunt in which to linger. Once the den of intellectuals and fringe artists, Peet's went IPO in early 2001 and is now frequented almost exclusively by people who want the conveniences of a franchised coffeehouse without kowtowing to Starbucks.

The Food
The coffee is robust without being overbearing. Strong but not bitter, Peet's "deep roast" beans make for a fine cup of joe. Straight up or in a latte, its dark, full-bodied character carries through. Oft eclipsed by the coffees, a wide array of teas are also available. Oolongs, blacks and greens of all ilk can be enjoyed in a cup or by the pound to go. You can always nab a blueberry muffin or an orange scone, but why not opt for one of the fine French pastries? Almond creme croissants, buttery apricot bars or eggy pain crème fraîche studded with fresh blueberries pair well with the brews.

Had to laugh at the words "sterile" in one of the other reviews: that person has obviously never entered Peet's on Market in the Castro. Opened in 1992, this long, narrow space has concrete walls, old laminate floors, limited lighting (no fluoerescents) and well worn dark wood fixtures throughout. There is nothing chain-like about this place except the easy to read menus. The staff are friendly, warm and funny. Hundreds of people stop by here every day braving the long lines because the service and the drinks are outstanding.

Peet's started over in Berkeley and chained its way to San Francisco. It is ok for a chain, but I strongly prefer the independent coffeehouses the city has to offer. They have much more character and often the coffee is just as good or better.

Better service and quality drinks than other trendy ubiquitious chains, but still lacking in local small coffee-house atmosphere. Can be quite busy, but service is generally fast. Few places to sit. Large selection of teas and coffees for purchase and preparation at home.
