A mecca of multicultural expression..
In Short
Although its exhibitions are often unjustly overshadowed by those at the adjacent SFMOMA, CFA remains a risk-taking, integral part of the city's art scene. From local dance company Joe Goode Performance Group to the Chinese Opera Troupe and the physically challenged Axis Dance Company, the center strikes a democratizing note by showcasing a rich panoply of Bay Area, national and international artists inside its 755-seat theater.
the place for local, contemporary art. Although SFMOMA houses modern art, I find it's exhibitions in general (with a few exceptions) stale. I usually leave in a bad mood with curses on my lips. In opposition (in viewpoint and location), you have YBCA. Not only does it house a gallery with current and local artists, but it shows films, sponsors theater and dance (see Lines Ballet), and almost anything else. YBCA gives the art world (that is still living) a voice. You may not like everything you see, but better yet it hasn't been filtered for your viewing pleasure. It's real.
Beautiful Space. Amidst all the criticism San Francisco has gotten in recent years for the demise of its arts community, the construction of this beautiful arts center has been a huge addition to the city's cultural landscape. Not only does the center showcase quality experimental and traditional arts, but it is also a wonderful architectural landmark, despite its proximity to the aesthetically challenged Metreon complex.
