Editorial Review for Sushi Ran – by Daniel Liszt
The Scene
Colorful modern paintings and framed photos of regulars decorate this casual, calming spot. Couples and families sit at wood tables, enjoying quiet conversation, while folks at the bar chat up sushi chefs about the fresh fish displayed in front of them. The waitstaff, which provides team service, helps inexperienced diners--often beginning with, "How adventurous are you?"
The Food
Classic and signature spins on Japanese seafood line a several-page menu. For starters, the sunomono salad sparkles with juicy crab shredded on a mountain of thin cucumber slices bathing in rice vinegar. Chunky Japanese cucumbers give a crispy crunch to the marinated-salmon roll--each over-sized bite filled with creamy avocado and crowned by a lime sliver. Grapefruit adds a citrus kiss to smoked hamachi tataki: a tongue- and eye-pleasing specialty dressed with decadent yuzu truffle sauce and paired with a delicate, diced avocado mold.

I've been going to Shushi Ran for years... and years... it's the default location of the place, I guess. It's ubiquitousness on "best of" lists is one of the strangest things I can think of in the restaurnat scene. The "restaurant"area is very small and hard to get into, but the two times I've dined at the bar the food was unremarkeable. The overflow "bar" area is where I have sat trying out things like the highly-rated black cod and caramelized shrimp (the former very greasy and both so salty I could almost not eat them), the grilled squid (always a bit overcharred and much better witht the sauce that comes witht the nori-wrapped ahi), etc. The wine list has gotten noticibly less interesting in the past year or two, though the service has gotten much better.
Pros: Good social scene. Large sake selection
Cons: Mediocre food and wine list

I heard that this was a great restaurant; then I heard that it had gone downhill; so I went to try it out for myself. The fish was excellent, high quality, fresh. We sat at the sushi bar and the chef told us to 'trust him' when we ordered the omakase. I'm glad we did! I will definitely be going back.
Pros: excellent fish, good service even during busy time
Cons: very crowded
