I kept telling my wife that we needed to take the Ferry from where we live (SF) to Tiburon and eat lunch at Guaymas. We packed up our day gear and headed down to the Wharf and jumped on the Ferry. I hadn't been to Guaymas since 1998 but the day was so nice I was sure we would have a good time.
When we got off the Ferry and stepped into Guaymas we were sat almost immediately. We sat at our table for ten minutes before a busser came over with some cold tortillas and tasty salsas. We had no water or napkins. Ten minutes later a waiter came over and apologized that nobody had taken our drink order. We ordered our drinks and ten minutes later we got up and walked out without our drinks ever being delivered. Thiry minutes and all we got was an apology for pretty much nothing. The guy who sat us said, "thank you" when we were leaving after I told him what happend. Wrong thing to say Dude. Next time say, "I'm sorry. Would you like to speak with a manager."
Something for Guaymas to consider. Most people take bad service personally. It's an easy way to lose sophisticated dining clientele when you have a terrible wait-staff. I will never take anyone to your restaurant and will strongly not-recommend your establishment.
We went to Guaymas yesterday to celebrate my fiancees birthday. I'd last been there in 2002 and remember the food as excellent. Well, something has changed. I found the food to be very bland, uninspiring and unrefined compared to when I last visited. The venue also looks more run down, with a clogged toilet and a broken soap dispenser in the restroom, and general wear and tear everywhere. It was also freezing cold, even though we were sitting inside.
On the plus side, I found the service to be very good, and the margaritas were outstanding. I highly recommend the Mexicana, which I found very refreshing.
A change is needed. My last visit has been the worse. I will never eat here again which is sad. The food quality has been declining. The pork was dry and bland. The shrimp were way too few and were also bland. The chips were greasy. As always the salsas are great and so is the view. The love of serving a great mexican plate has lost its way here. It used to be such a treat.
Surprised by the reviews!. I've always enjoyed Guaymas since the 90s, and I try to bring out of town guests there to enjoy the view of San Francisco, the outdoor dining, and the portions of food. As with any restaurant, I'm sure that it has gone through phases. However, all the times that I've been there, I've never really had problems, like the ones listed in the recent reviews. I'm not sure what dishes the people have tried to say that it's bland. The ceviche is tasty, and so is the carnitas plate. My only complaints have been with the front host/hostess. The person there always seems harried. Overall, I would recommend to try at least once, especially for those seeking an experience outside of San Francisco. Make a day trip of it by taking the Ferry in from the City, exploring the Ark shops, and then having an early dinner before heading back!
Go only for the view.
I really want to love this place, but every time I go, they find a way to blow it badly. With co-workers in town, I decided to give it a try after 8 or 9 months. This time we had no trouble getting a dock-side table. Only 20 or so people on a Wednesday evening. For a change, we had a friendly waiter. But the tamales were still dry. Anything less than the top shelf Marguarita is a disapointment. We had a problem with our bill and the manager was uncooperative. Her excuse was that it was her first day! Seems funny since the previous reviewer thinks there was a new manager a few weeks ago.
Stop in for the view, but don't expect much more.
Resting on its laurels. I went with a group of friends who touted the beautiful bay view (amazing) and the food (better than average). The waiter was gruff and did not bring extra plates or water, even when asked multiple times. Our plates were then removed from the table before we were finished eating. When I summoned the manager, he seemed very disinterested in the situation and half-heartedly apologized, but didn't do anything about the situation. I think Guaymas' new general manager had better focus on upgrading her support staff.
Excellent Experiences. My boyfriend and I have been to Guaymas many times. We love the warm and friendly upbeat atmospere. They have a brand new General Manager who has given the place a fresh new attitude. She's great! Amazing food every visit.
Good Food, Terrible Service. Our waitress could not have looked more bored or acted more disinterested in us. She wouldn't even make eye contact, staring out the window looking oh so bored while taking our order. Good luck getting any attention once your meal arrives. We had to ask several times for more chips & water. Fortunately, we did enjoy the food (carnitas, tamalas and fajitas), but left disappointed because of the service. We've had bad service before, but this was the first time we left a tip which reflected our true feelings. Hopefully, she'll get the message!
This popular Tiburon restaurant serves up nouvelle Mexican food alongside dramatic San Francisco views..
Designed in the '80s, this Mexican restaurant features a pastel "Miami Vice"-like hue. Prime seating is outside on the deck, which has heat lamps, wind guards and a dramatic view across the bay. The focus of the menu is fresh, regional Mexican cuisine. House specialties include grilled seafood and tamales. The basics (rice, beans, margaritas) are also available, and house-made tortillas with salsa are served in lieu of chips.
Good, Not Great. This restaurant is sort of a high class Mexican restaurant, it's not the same food you'd get in another Mexican restaurant. The food here was pretty good and if you're sitting out on the deck you have a great view. However, the food is a bit pricey and the service was mixed.
