Editorial Review for Zachary's Chicago Pizza – by Mitchell Anderson
The Scene
In this cozy haven, the din of diners mingles with the clamor of a frantic kitchen. Plaques, posters and other Zachary's paraphernalia plaster the walls in a declaration of the unrivaled splendor of its pizza. Piping-hot pies are served in the cramped dining area on wooden stools beside each table.
The Food
Ooey-gooey, crispy and chewy, the stuffed pizzas preserve the flavor of ingredients by sealing them between two layers of dough. The signature Pride and Joy pie, like the other deep-stuffed pizzas, harbors the freshness of an organic garden. Between the golden bed of baked dough and the top quilt of zesty tomato chunks and secret spices is a moist mix of spinach, mushrooms, melted cheeses and dough. Though most famous for its thick, rich pies, the thin-crust Zachary's Special makes omnivores of everyone, with its savory melange of onions, mushrooms and green peppers scattered abundantly around pieces of succulent Italian sausages.

Insider Tips
Save TimeBecause the wait is generally 45 minutes or more, call ahead of time so your pizza is baking even before you get there.
The ExtrasIf you're not up for the crowds, order a half-baked pizza, preheat your oven, and enjoy a hot pizza in the comfort of your own home.

I went to visit my friend in Berkeley and asked her to take me to the best pizza place in town, and she brought me to Zachary's. And must I say, I was not disappointed! I'm more of a New York Pizza fan, but this place had amazing deep-dish pizza with a lot of tomato sauce! The Chicken Pizza and Spinach & Mushroom (both under Zachary's "favorites") were absolutely delicious! Although it was pretty packed (It was a Friday night), they had a very efficient waiting system where we would order the food while we were waiting so the pizza can come out right when we sat down!
Pros: delicious deep-dish/stuffed pizza, fast-as-possible service

They serve regular thin-crust, but you'd be a fool not to get the deep-dish. Best tomato sauce anywhere, delicious cheese, tons of toppings to chose from, but even plain old cheese is hardly "plain." There can be a long wait on weekend nights, but the place is fun and the servers are good, and its worth the wait every time once you tuck in. Calling ahead is probably a good idea on weekends. This place has been Zagat rated since the early nineties. You can even buy half-baked pizzas to take home. Probably not good for parties over 4; the place isn't super-small, but it's not big either. Personally, this is the best pizza I've ever had, well-worth a drive from Marin.
