Editorial Review for Cafe Fanny – by Joan Zoloth
The Scene
On sunny days, customers pick up their food from the small kitchen (which is surrounded with baskets of fresh bread) then eat under olive trees in the nearby parking lot. A small stand-up bar inside, along with sparse outdoor seating, usually fills up with an eclectic mix of locals early on.
The Food
The small lunch menu is prized for its freshness and clear flavors. With a simple twist, ordinary sandwiches become extraordinary. A sublime grilled-mozzarella sandwich is perked up by tapenade, and an open-faced egg-salad sandwich--toasted triangles of Acme bread slathered with chunky egg salad--gets a lift from a squiggle of anchovies and red bell pepper. Even the French cafe standard croque monsieur is a perfect balance of Gruyere and ham. Save room for seasonal desserts, such as fruit crisps and Cafe Fanny's creamy homemade ice cream.

The first time I went to Cafe Fanny, I knew I was in for a treat. Their food is to die for. I absolutely LOVE the poached eggs on toast. And I didn't used to be a fan of French-style eggs! But theirs are so FRESH! I feel pampered eating breakfast here. I also love that everything is organic, no matter what I order. And it's certainly not easy finding organic cappuccinos in the east bay! Cafe Fanny also supports local farmers, and sustainable farming practices. Their food is amazing, their coffee is fantastic, and even though it's a short walk from the north Berkeley bart, I'm there almost weekly because I am in love with their food! It's worth every penny! Go as soon as you get a chance!
Pros: Organic Cappuccinos in the East Bay! AMAZING food! They support sustainable local farming!
Cons: Parking can be tricky! (Try the back lot) Limited seating capacity

I've been going to Cafe Fanny ever since my sister introduced me to it (she had heard about it in Los Angeles). The counter service is actually very friendly (in spite of what other people have written) and even though you have to wait for the food, it is always tasty and well prepared. A bit on the pricey side but worth it for the fresh and organic eats. I love the chicken sandwich and the cafe aulaits.
Pros: Organic, Fresh, Good menu
Cons: Lack of seating, Price
