Neighborhood Nosh: Haight Street Restaurants

Updated: February 01, 2009

The long stretch of Haight Street winds through two very distinct neighborhoods: Lower Haight is perhaps one of SF's most laid-back 'hoods, with casual restos and hipster-friendly boutiques; Upper Haight is one of the city's most high-profile spots for being ground zero during the Flower Power '60s and current home to gutter punks and aging hippies. Despite the difference, both areas offer a host of good eateries--mostly casual, fun spots to grab a bite after a few drinks punctuated by a few more refined places that make for a nice night out.

576 Haight St, San Francisco, CA 94117 (map)

This piggy-themed, award-winning BBQ joint in the Lower Haight serves up killer pulled pork, beef brisket and a slew of sides all day long. Big squeeze bottles of sauces and rolls of paper towels grace every table.

    Read Reviews

598 Haight St, San Francisco, CA 94117 (map)

A step up from typical the typical Haight Street resto, RNM offers French- and Italian-inspired plates in a simply, modern space. The three-course prix fixe is an especially good deal: your choice of small plate, an entree or pizza, and dessert for $28.

  3. 3 4 Star Rating: Recommended Kate's Kitchen
    Read Reviews

471 Haight St, San Francisco, CA 94117 (map)

Heaping helpings of home-style grub in cozy surroundings make this place a favorite stop for the hungry (and hungover) breakfast crowd. See the daily board of specials for some of the restaurant's best offerings.

  4. 4 5 Star Rating: Highly Recommended Rosamunde Sausage Grill

545 Haight St, San Francisco, CA 94117 (map)

Classic and exotic sausages (plus a pretty solid vegan option) grace the griddle at this Lower Haight snack shack, and most patrons take their hot pepper-piled dogs next door to Toronado for a pint to put out the fire. Tuesday is burger day--lines are long, so get there early.

  5. 5 5 Star Rating: Highly Recommended Nickie's
    Read Reviews

466 Haight Street, San Francisco, CA 94117 (map)

Pub grub isn't hard to find in this 'hood, but Nickies does it surprisingly well. California and Creole cuisine, specialty soju cocktails and an eclectic music scene are offered in this lounge-like venue.

Upper Haight

  1. 6 4.5 Star Rating: Recommended Pork Store Cafe
    Read Reviews

1451 Haight St, San Francisco, CA 94117 (map)

Breakfast is the name of the game at this funky Haight Street cafe that's popular with the carb-craving crowd. Don't be fooled by the name, though, there's plenty of vegetarian fare, and it's just as unhealthy and delicious as its meaty counterparts.

  2. 7 4 Star Rating: Recommended The Alembic
    Read Reviews

1725 Haight St, San Francisco, CA 94117 (map)

This narrow bar/restaurant, a sister space to Magnolia, serves small plates, classic cocktails and artisan brews--and takes all three seriously. The outstanding pub food renditions make beautiful music with the connoisseur-grade drinks.

  3. 8 4 Star Rating: Recommended Magnolia Pub & Brewery
    Read Reviews

1398 Haight St, San Francisco, CA 94117 (map)

The Haight-Ashbury institution has gone from hippie to hip, and from a laid-back burger-and-brew joint to an ambitious gastropub. Look for local, sustainable ingredients in the pub-grub fare and a fine selection of beers brewed on the premises (including a few cask-conditioned ales).

  4. 9 4 Star Rating: Recommended Cha Cha Cha
    Read Reviews

1801 Haight St, San Francisco, CA 94117 (map)

This Upper Haight spot is notoriously popular for group dining--the Caribbean-style tapas and stellar sangria by the pitcher make it a lively hangout, even if the no-reservation policy makes for long waits.

  5. 10 4.5 Star Rating: Recommended Citrus Club
    Read Reviews

1790 Haight St, San Francisco, CA 94117 (map)

Noodle dishes from around Asia--pho, pad thai, you get the idea--are served up fresh in this cheap, popular and fun restaurant on near Golden Gate Park on Haight Street. There are plenty of options for vegetarian and meat eaters alike.
