Everyone knows where to get a stack of do-the-job diner waffles to combat a hangover. But, on March 25, the most holy of the random egg-beaten food holidays, International Waffle Day, you cannot settle for just any line cook's boxed-mix batter. From sweet-and-savory soul food to Asian street snacks, here are the Bay Area's best--and a few of the most unusual--waffle dishes.

The oddly delicious sweet-and-savory entree has hit SF with the force of a culinary trend like no other. The ultimate in comfort food--and the brunch item du jour at restaurants around town--has even inspired new restaurants dedicated to the cause of perfecting it. Case in point: Gussie's Chicken and Waffles in the Fillmore district, opened by an alumnus of LA's Roscoe's (aka the French Laundry of chicken and waffles). Waffle options include classic buttermilk, cornmeal, banana pecan and even vegan buckwheat and come alongside your choice of fried white- or dark-meat chicken. <BR><B>Runners-up:</B> Little Skillet, Hard Knox
Liege (aka Brussels) waffles are a hard-to-find but worth-the-hunt version of the traditional Belgian waffle--they're denser and packed with tiny bursts of sugar crystals in every bite. La Trappe makes an amazing batch from scratch every night, but be sure to order it with your entrees, because they tend to run out of batter by the time you're ready for dessert. <BR><B>Runner-up:</B> Waffle Mania Truck
A traditional Japanese street food, taiyaki is a fish-shaped grilled pastry pouch made from waffle batter and filled with bean paste, custard, chocolate or other sweet fillings. May's makes them before your eyes in the Japantown Center (and, yes, they are delicious enough to brave the horror-movie-set-like environs of that mall). <BR><B>Runner-up:</B> Sweet Breams in San Mateo
Another Asian iteration of the waffle, an eggette (or egg puff) is a Hong Kong-style street food that looks like a waffle turned inside out, or like waffle bubble wrap--definitely more fun than your standard Eggo. In addition to their signature sweet crepes, Genki does a great egg puff that you can order topped with any of the crepe fillings, from Nutella to blueberry sauce. <BR><B> Runner-up:</B> Eggettes in Glen Park
Next to apple pie, there is no more all-American dessert than an ice-cream cone. And, among the contenders for best edible ice-cream container, the waffle cone clearly reigns supreme. This Bernal Heights parlor is best known for its wide array of vegan-friendly ice creams, but we love them best for their waffle cones and bowls, made fresh for each order. <BR><B>Runner-up:</B> Polly Ann's
